These pieces are mixed media collages. They are constructed in the mandala format: a circle in a square. The subject of the collage is inside of the circle. In this case it is the bonsai tree. There is one apple tree collage. The others represent the bonsai tree in each season. To create the work, first I determine the size of the circle, the tree and the borders. Then I select a general palette for each collage. These all have an earthiness to them. The next step involves locating papers with patterns or fragments of patterns that will work well together and relate to the story of the collage. The patterns should be in the colors of the general palette and should be of varying sizes. I begin with what I know, which is the center of the collage, and work my way out to the edges. The center is the area of greatest contrast so that the subject is emphasized and reads clearly. Collaging is a process of layering, usually small pieces over larger pieces. First I cover the background area in each section with paper in a chosen color. Then I layer patterned pieces over the background. The arrangement of these patterned pieces sets up a rhythm which is critical to the work. If I don’t have patterned pieces in the color, shape or size that I need, I create my own patterns by drawing out a shape and repeating it. The repeated patterns unify the work visually and conceptually. I am interested in achieving a luminous surface, so I include a lot of metallic pieces or metallic outlined pieces, and I preserve the outlining when I cut. Each area is designed separately, however, everything must be well-integrated. The goal is to pull the viewer’s eye out of the center with some excitement at the border. The effect is simultaneously dynamic and holistic. It’s the plot of the story. The outside border cannot be uniform because that would not hold anyone’s interest. In these collages, I have added watercolor and graphite images. These additions are like explosions. They intensify the experience of the collage. To complete the project I insert more metallic to the background where it is needed to make the entire surface glow. When the collages are completed, they are varnished multiple times with UV protective varnish. In real life, these collages are very dense with patterns, textures and layers as well as colors and design. They are complicated, but pleasing to behold.

For beginning and intermediate students, learn methods of starting paintings or drawings more successfully. Using varying short poses, the early fundamentals of drawing and painting, human proportion, creating vitality of gesture and developing an eye for design, will be thoroughly addressed. Additionally, we will investigate the human figure in its structural, rhythmic sense and assist in how to view a finishing game differently by focusing on topographic, rhythmic lines and forms.
