An introductory study of the basic principles and techniques in oil painting, for anyone who paints or wants to learn.   This class is also excellent for advanced students with "self taught bad habits", who will learn to overcome them to go on to more complex challenges in oil.


ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR [GD-212-1A] / $522.00
Create logos, layouts,  illustrations, headlines with special effects, posters, banners and ‘prototype’ product renderings. Bring your own creativity and talents into this amazing and almost limitless vector program. Create portfolio pieces based on intended career goals.

An introductory course in stained glass design. Design, draw, cut, tape and solder stained glass in the Tiffany technique. Work with varied glass types. Advanced students will be encouraged to design and create more intricate and complex 2-D and 3-D projects.

Learn to put your camera to professional use and discover all venues available in the commercial photography industry.  Learn your basics: WB-ISO settings, aperture, shutter speed, electing auto-focus point and manual focus in a hands-on studio and off-location environments. Work with the camera / cell phone that you own.


ADOBE PHOTOSHOP [GD-214-1A] /$522.00
Focus on the tools and their varied applications in a commercial-based environment. Cloning, scanning, color correcting,photo stitching, text and some special effects. Projects selected are based on jobs and assignments from the work place. Each project is intended to be used in a general Graphic Design portfolio.


CERAMICS II [FS-227-1A] /$527.00
At the intermediate level, work on individual and group projects
making functional and sculptural objects using hand building, wheel throwing and mixed methods. Learn varied types of clay, varieties of stain applications and learn the workings of how items are kiln fired, finished to a professional level.

Learn how photographers set up and style a commercial photo shoot. Use ceramics and jewelry or just about anything you would like to promote using just window light. Learn reflective bouncing and diffusing light, creating multiple light sources from one ambient light and how to use household flash bulbs.

A course for beginners, whether interested in a pottery career or for personal enjoyment. Work on individual and group projects making functional and non-functional objects using hand building methods. Study various Oil Painting, Watercolor and Pastel techniques and emulate them using familiar Photoshop tools.
Must have working knowledge of Photoshop. Create customized brushes and swatches to digitally paint in any Photoshop version available. Learn to combine digital and traditional artwork.

The study of color, its characteristics and interactions. Learn basic properties of color identification, creation and modification of hue, value and strength, while mastering color mixing. Emphasis is placed on the study and application of color theory and systems to achieve desired effects in visual communication.


ADOBE INDESIGN [GD-215-1A] /$522.00
InDesign is the essential page layout program for the commercial and career graphic designer. Learn how to create and format new documents, make modifications, import text, graphics and photos, create style sheets and prepare documents for print, all while working on projects that will enhance options for work in the arts industry.


CONTEMPORARY FIGURE  [FP-255-1A] /$542.00

Practice painting methods by artists whose work has expanded to more modern and contemporary forms of self expression. Paint the figure in an environment while form, composition, light and shading methods are explored. Exercise what comes from within, to mind's eye and learn to express in a contemporary way, in acrylic or oil based mediums.

Master the core essentials of drawing the figure from life and placing it in an environment. In a step by step process, a constructive and observational method is taught, by drawing the figure from start to finish. Form and anatomy, and light and shading methods are covered. Live models are scheduled each week and with quick and extended poses from two to three weeks


EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION [IL-287-1A] /$477.00
Emphasis will be placed on developing a consistent style as well as the techniques of conceptual problem solving in creating artwork based on the written word. Assignments will be of an editorial nature with contemporary themes. All assignments will be used as portfolio samples intended for professional presentation.

Explore the use of watercolor and markers combined to achieve professional results. Examples will be shown on practical applications of the medium. Watercolors combined with markers and marker pen can produce spectacular results by using different papers and rendering styles.


ART HISTORY [AH-160-1A] /$477.00
This art appreciation course provides the student with an overview of today’s field of art and the range of possibilities existing in the commercial and fine art areas. It will introduce the student to the major art and design movements, and the artists and ideas associated with them.


CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT PAINTING [FP-296-1A] /$542.00

Explore how to set up the model, block in mosaic color shapes of dark to light. Build up the painting with warm and cool temperature relationships to create believable flesh tones, drapery and backgrounds. Pull the painting together starting with focus on the subject, and bring to a finish. Discussions on keeping value relationships, creating varied edge handling to produce strong contrast.


CLASSIC PORTRAIT PAINTING [FP-296-2A] /$542.00

Cover the essentials of painting the head; including how to construct the head using planes, forms, proportions and placement of the features. Learn to create a model's likeness by using light and shade. Explore working with a palette designed for varied complexions, while learning composition of various objects surrounding the figure. Painting drapery will be touched upon.

DRAWING & PAINTING STILL LIFE [FA-222-1A] /477.00
This class will cover many facets of drawing and painting from still objects. Study simple one color objects i.e. casts, for the purposes of discussing and improving the student’s critical drawing and value study. Move into the study of multiple objects and their arrangement for the purpose of studying composition. More advanced concepts of image creation, creative story telling through objects, and light composition will be covered as well. 


STAINED GLASS [FS-252-2A] /$502.00
Design, draw, cut, tape and solder glass pieces. Begin with simple designs and straight cuts. Advanced students will be encouraged to design and create more intricate, curved glass projects including, complex 2-D and 3-D projects. Learn how to use soldering iron, flux, glass cutters, running pliers and grozing pliers and put an entire creation together.

The emphasis of the class is on conceptual thinking and creative problem-solving. Projects are devised with the intent of ultimate portfolio worthiness. Some form of computer drawing ability is necessary to thrive in this class, as it is
not intended to include basic Illustrator or Photoshop instruction.

DRAWING II [FA-280-2A]
From Thumbnails to Finish - Learn to bring your concepts from your head to the easel. This drawing class will teach the steps necessary to bring your work from the idea stage to a finished portfolio piece. We will explore thumb-nailing, comping, picture making, reference materials, models, costume and final stages of design and prep for painting. We will emphasize imaginative and sci-fi, fantasy based work as a basis for this step by step process. All types of work are encouraged.

ANATOMY [FD-106-1A] /$477.00
Improve figure drawing skills by studying the underlying structure of the human form, (bone, muscle, tendon, and cartilage), while sharpening observational skills through careful study of the surface form. Work from casts, photos, skeleton, live models, and overlays of the muscular system as anatomical information is applied to artistic use. The fall semester will cover drawing heads and portraits. The Spring Semester will cover the entire body.

Mediums: exploring and conquering techniques will introduce and reintroduce students to traditional mediums but used in nontraditional techniques. The class will learn about prepared surfaces and how mediums respond to those surfaces. Silverpoint, charcoal, graphite, oil paint, color pencil and watercolor will be explored.

Traditional painting techniques for the contemporary
artist. Develop oil painting skills in the tradition of the old masters. Working from a toned canvas, develop an under painting, painting dark to light and glazing.

Typography is the cornerstone of graphic design. This class covers rules of good typography and how it applies to design. Font styles, sizes,and proper typeface selection has an impact on the message of the design. We will also cover the use of music, video and print, the principles of graphic design and advertising are discussed.

Working from a live model, techniques explored will range from traditional to contemporary. The elements of drawing, as well as the emotional content will be the focus. Students will develop visual graphic information and design skills required to create websites. Students also learn professional applications such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash. The course projects include critique, typography, color, digital imaging and composition.
