In this workshop we will develop a greater control over graphite on paper by working from a lithograph reference from Charles Bargue’s Drawing Course by, reproducing it.  Beginning with simplistic linear shapes we will establish a structure, then we will continue to refine the line work to a high level of accuracy.  At this stage, value will be added as we study how faster and slower gradations describe a three dimensional form in two dimensional media.  Lastly we will focus on pressure control and how to adjust value application as we render the drawing to a clean and accurate finish. Materials needed: Arches Hot Press Water Color Paper 16 x 20” or larger, Graphite Pencils; 3H, HB, and 3B softnesses, Kneaded Eraser, Drawing Board, Masking Tape, Ruler.

Examine the structural, expressive and design factors of drawing the figure from life. The use of line, value, planes, masses, angles, foreshortening will be employed in drawing the nude and draped figure. Capture the likeness of the the figure while constructing an interesting and balanced composition, with an emphasis on infusing an emotive element to factor the the student`s drawing. (A final project maybe given to be done outside of class as well) Materials Needed: Newsprint pad, charcoal and or toned papers, charcoal ( verity of types), conti crayons, and graphite, kneaded eraser.

Drawing - an observational process

In order to convey the three dimensions we experience in reality, we must understand the techniques and process of seeing and interpreting visual reference to effectively create the illusion of depth on a two dimensional surface. This workshop will reinforce the use of angles, mapping, plumb lines, and positive /negative shapes during the observational process. Basic principles of perspective and understanding of light, value and edges to create three dimensional forms will be discussed. Learn to refine shape and value structure in your drawings by sketching your way through simple object exercises. Starting with basic drawing elements, increase understanding of use of shading, using hard and soft lines, light and shadow, and composition to create a great drawing. Though designed for beginners, intermediate and advanced students are also welcome to work on refining techniques.  Materials needed: A pastel paper pad or at least (2) sheets of Canson (sky blue) pastel paper, charcoal black 6B and charcoal white (8 of each pencil) a kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener.  PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
