TUESDAY EVENING CERAMICS/MULTI-MEDIA MINI SCULPTURES
OPEN STUDIO 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
FALL DATES: SEPT 20, 2016 - NOV 29, 201
(AGES 16+ w/parental permission)

Materials: Stoneware clay & natural rocks, stones, pebbles, sand. Objective: Explore properties of various stoneware clay and learn to enhance and use these to sculpt a miniature sculpture. Shape, design, surface structure is an interesting playing field the student will explore and develop. We intentionally abandon pre-manufactured, commercial materials and rely essentially on three materials: stoneware clay, slip, natural stone. Less is more. Challenge: A given, often intricate shape, the rock. Malleable clay of somewhat coarse structure. The clay is sculpted into a body that accommodates the rock (or multiple rocks). In firing clay vitrifies (shrinks) at a specific rate. Balance, proportions, shape, angles, surface come into play. To realize the difference so that rock and clay remain a “good fit” after firing while creating a unique sculpture is challenge and reward. Firing Options: The sculptures are fired unglazed to emphasize the materials. The bare naked clay shows the structure and feel honestly and without bias. Stoneware firing can employ a natural wood ash glaze that adds a layer of semi-translucent color, shades and appearance to the sculpture. Materials supplied.  Fee: $30.00 per session / Walk-in. NO pre-registration necessary - just pay on the spot. [duCret 'career program' students/FREE]
