PAINTING: PRESSURE & MATERIAL CONTROL

Focusing primarily on our pressure, we will develop greater control over our materials through a number of value exercises.  Understanding how to utilize our brushes, we will focus on application and manipulation on the painting surface to develop an accurate replication of various gradations and color transitions.  By critically looking at fast and slow transitions of value we will replicate these from reference prints. Materials needed: 2x Bristle Filbert Size 4, 2x Bristle Filbert Size 6, 1x Sable or Synthetic Sable Round Size 6, 1x Sable or Synthetic Sable Round Size 8, 16x20” Canvas, Winton Oil Paints; Titanium White, Lamp Black, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Yellow Ochre.

STILL LIFE PAINTING

Learn to paint with realistic accuracy by working with shape, tone, color, pattern and texture, using a range of different oil techniques. Students will learn about composition, the interaction of positive shapes and negative space and will develop the ability to realistically transfer three dimensional objects to a two dimensional surface. Practice multiple oil painting techniques, including: color mixing, paint application, and blocking in the composition. Materials needed: Download Materials List. PORTRAIT PAINTING INTENSIVE

With Rosemary Brushes and Michael Harding Oil Paints Billy will focus on academic portraiture, including underpainting, gessoing and tinting, and drawing a portrait with large geometric measurements. Learn basic methods of color mixing to capture life-like flesh tones and setting up a palette. Paint application will be discussed to build textures, with interesting brush work. Students will develop portraits into a more rendered final painting. Materials needed: Oil paint kit, (primary colors), linseed oil, white rags, 2 medium flat brushes, 2 medium round brushes, brush cleaner, and 1 16 x 20 (pre-primed) canvas board. Ever think about working big? Ever think about working huge? Want to get loose? Stop making tiny hash marks and make body sized brush strokes? This broad based project workshop will help to break you out of the rut of the "tiny" and get you attacking the painting, taking risks and exploring materials. All types of work and approaches will be embraced. We will work on the wall or floor. Materials needed: (whatever you have to bring): old house paint, acrylics, poster paint, collage & found materials and anything else you’d like to add to your painting, plus 1 roll of (pre-primed) canvas or heavy paper (48" width x 48+" to any length). We will meet every Saturday morning for six weeks at diverse locations with our easels and supplies. (For newbies or those seasoned in working outdoors). Together we will explore different kinds of subject matter, via plein air. Starting each session with sketching, we will use composition as the backbone for making interesting and strong on-site work. Color and form will be stressed. Any style or medium is acceptable. Driving to locations will be required. Some possible locations will be: a boat yard, Great Swamp, Duke Gardens, railway location, industrial location, down town, etc. Alternate indoor locations will be available for inclement weather. Materials needed: Acrylic paint kit, (primary colors),  jar of water, white rags, 2 flat brushes, 2 medium round brushes, acrylic 16 x 20 (pre-primed) canvas board or HB, 2B, 4B pencils, 11 x 14 sketch pad, eraser, and sharpener, if you prefer to draw. A six week workshop will incorporate elements of portrait painting within an environment. Areas covered will include creating initial content, mastering composition and facial structure and how the initial decision making processes are imperative and reflective to te final image you desire to create. The use of perspective, lighting of the subject and color mixing and application will also be covered. Workshop is geared toward the beginner to intermediate-advanced student. Start from a thumbnail sketch for best design and value setup, moving to grisaille with a color spotting technique to achieve the right color, temperature and value before blocking in. Additional focus will be on colored gels, composition, strong value design, temperature changes, and structural drawing and color theory to mix realistic flesh-tones. Various surfaces, palette knife, dry brush, drip techniques with various mediums to produce special effects will be covered. Materials needed:  Rosemary Brushes, Master Choice long flats, Ivory flats and filberts, and domed sable collection with Blue Ridge Oil, Michael Harding, and Rembrandt oil paint. In this four week workshop, you will choose your own still life subject. Students will be encouraged to paint from a free impressionist palette, to note the different hues present in the areas of light and shadow on the same object.  Focus will be placed on observing color which can result in more vivid painting. Attention will be given to composition and drawing as needed. All levels are welcome.
